Serving our McAnthony Window Patrons Since 1987
Hungry people in Davenport have known where to find a meal at St. Anthony Parish since the late 1800s. In those days, anyone in need would simply knock on the kitchen window of the priests' rectory next to the church. The priest or his cook would slide open the window and hand out food to those who were hungry.
In 1987, Father Conroy, then pastor, and Sister Ludmilla, pastoral associate, decided to formalize this long-standing tradition by opening the kitchen window each weekday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. to serve meals. About six months later, Sister Ludmilla walked into the kitchen one morning and found the maintenance man installing a sliding glass service window—much like those found at a McDonald's drive-thru. At that moment, the name "McAnthony Window" was born, and it has been known by that name ever since.
When the old rectory was later demolished to make way for a larger parish center, the parish made sure the ministry would continue. A new kitchen was built in nearly the same location, complete with another sliding service window, allowing McAnthony Window to continue feeding our neighbors with dignity and compassion.
Nearly two centuries after St. Anthony Parish first began welcoming those in need, the tradition continues through McAnthony Window, where the kitchen window remains a place of hope, hospitality, and Christ's love for all who come seeking a meal.
